The Early Days

Cannabis has been around for thousand of years. The first recorded incident person to use cannabis as a medicine was a Chinese surgeon called Hua Tuo ( C140-208). He used it as an anaesthetic. Ancient Greeks and Romans were also familiar with cannabis while in the Middle East use spread through the Islamic empire to North America.


It is believed to have ended up in the slope of Asia specifically in the regions now known as Mongolia and Southern Siberia. It goes back 12000 years placing it amongst humanities oldest cultivated crops.

Burned cannabis seeds have been found in Kurgian burial mounds in Siberia dating back 3000BC and some tombs of noble people buried in the Xinjiang region of China and Siberia around 2500BC have included large have included large amounts of mummified Cannabis.

Cannabis came into the Middle East between 2500BC and 1400BC. It was likely used by Scythians, a nomadic Indo European group. They also carried it into Southern Russia and Ukraine. Germanic tribes brought it into Germany and from there to Britain during the 5th century with Anglo-Saxon invasions. Cannabis remains have also been found in the remains of Viking ships dating to the mid 9th century.


Ancient Netherlands : In 2007 a grave attributed to the Beaker culture(2459 – 2203BCE) was found containing an unusually large concentration of the cannabis plant concluding the ppapyruserson in the grave would have been very ill as this served as painkillers.

Ancient Egypt : The Ebers Papyrus (1550BC) describes medical cannabis. They used hemp as suppositories and relieving pain of hemorrhoids.

Ancient India : Cannabis was a major component in religious  practices in ancient India as well as medicinal. For many centuries, most parts of life in India incorporated cannabis in some form. Psychoactive properties were recognized and doctors used it for treatment of various illness and ailments( insomnia, headaches, various gastrointestinal disorders and pain frequently used in relief of childbirth).

Ancient Greece : Used to dress wounds and and sores on their horses. In humans, dried leaves were used for treatment in nose bleeds and cannabis seeds were used to expel tape worms.

Medieval Islam World : Arabic physicians made use of the diuretic, anti-emetic ,anti-inflammatory , analgesic and the antipyretic properties of cannabis and used it extensively from the 8th to 18th centuries.
